Studying Personal Experiences of Visualizations

Overview
This project investigates how people experience visualizations in the wild, i.e. outside of controlled lab settings, on their own devices, in their own environments, and without the imminent presence of a researcher. We are particularly interested in personal reactions and interpretations of visualizations that people encounter as part of their everyday lives – for instance through newspapers, social media, or personal data tracking applications. Through a series of qualitative studies we are creating a better understanding of how people engage with and make sense of visualizations, what value they see in them, and what factors influence people’s personal experiences of visualizations.
